Case Study: Piako Gliding Club

Piako Gliding Club in New Zealand installed cellular trackers in their fleet of 5 gliders.

Not all the aircraft have ADSB, and FLARM tracking was only useful near the airfield. With good cellular coverage around the area, cellular tracking provides a very affordable safety solution.

The club went from requiring cross-country pilots to fill out an 'intentions' book and manual phone activation, to fully automated tracking of their whole fleet, no matter the pilot. Pilots can just jump in and go. The duty instructor can easily monitor all club pilots.

Flight tracking can be a useful learning tool for pilots and instructors, to see what actually happened on a flight, and what could be improved. All without having to download flight files manually from devices.

Before the cellular trackers, pilots wanting tracking had to remember to manually turn on a cell phone tracker, but this was commonly forgotten, and can drain the pilot's phone battery, which can be critical when landing out in a field.
